untitled shankar family series

Indian royalty meets rock ‘n’ roll. Tracing the journey of this historical family who were at the front and center of a cultural, musical, and spiritual revolution.

From Anna Pavlova and Uday Shankar to Gandhi and Lakshmi Shankar to Jimi Hendrix and Anand Shankar to Ravi Shankar and the Beatles, the family has played a part in shaping the bedrock of the 1960’s.

The Shankar history goes back to the turn of the 20th century, December 8, 1900, to be exact, with the birth of Uday, a dancer and choreographer best known for bringing European theatrical and ballet techniques to Indian classical dance, incorporating the country’s colorful traditions of classical, folk and tribal dance, which he later spread to Europe and the U.S. in the ‘20s and ‘30s with his wife Amala.

R.V. Shastri was the first editor of Mahatma Gandhi’s reformist newspaper, Harijan. His daughter is Lakshmi.

The stories that weave the Shankar family into the fabric of history are deep and, outside of Ravi Shankar, largely unknown. With the massive Indian market around the world, plus the glitter of rock ‘n’ roll royalty, this series has will enthrall worldwide audiences.
